Meditations

An abundance of different meditations has been developed since Experiment with Light was first presented to a Quaker Meeting in late 1996. The books Light to live by (by Rex Ambler) and Seeing, Hearing, Knowing - Reflections on Experiment with Light (edited by John Lampen) contain altogether eight different versions. It is also possible to practise Light meditations without any verbal prompts.

All guided Light meditations follow the same pattern. A paragraph is read, followed by about four to seven minutes of silence. Then the next paragraph is read, followed by about the same time of silence, and so on. A meditation may be preceded by a few minutes of silence to give people the chance to 'center down'.

A word of caution needs to be said before you start practising. Please note that any Light meditation may trigger insights that could be disturbing. The Light meditation is best practised within a group of friends who can provide each other spiritual support when needed. If you do decide to practise it on your own, speaking from experience, it helps a great deal if you don't take yourself too seriously.

Meditation on the individual (modern language) / Experimento con la Luz el individuo
Written by Rex Ambler in 1996/97 and later revised with help from Catherine King Ambler and Helen Meads, published in 2008 in Seeing, Hearing, Knowing. For those who find it too wordy, Diana Lampen has produced a version with more concise introductions. A Spanish version was produced by Gustavo Cordoba in 2016.

Meditation on the individual (using George Fox's words)
George Fox quotations selected, edited and arranged by Klaus Huber in 2000, based on Rex Ambler's 1997 outline of Experiment with Light and an early draft of his book Truth of the Heart. Helen Meads later revised this version for use at retreats. Her 'Retreat version' uses authentic 17th century language, bringing it closer again to the 1997 outline, while a simplified and modernised version was produced for a retreat at Belgium & Luxembourgh Yearly Meeting 2015.

"MOWS" four-step meditation
Written by Diana and John Lampen around 2012, based on a passage in Rex Ambler's book Light to live by. MOWS is an acronym for the four steps: 1. Mind the Light, 2. Open your heart to the Truth, 3. Wait in the Light, 4. Submit to the Truth.

Outline of the experiment according to George Fox (with a little help from his friends)
A nine-step outline of the Experiment from early 1997, using quotations by George Fox and other early Friends, selected and arranged by Rex Ambler. This text incorporates the aspects of the individual, the group and the world. The annotated version gives the sources of the quotations used. The outline formed the basis of Light meditations used by the Quaker Retreat Group in the early years of Experiment with Light. In 2016, Sue Glover Frykman adapted this outline for a meditation used at the Friends World Committee Consultation (FWCC) World Plenary Meeting in Peru.
